In Canada, provincial governments have jurisdiction and establish laws, policies and regulations governing all mining related activities within their boundaries. In Ontario, the Ministry of Northern Development & Mines is the lead ministry that is responsible for overseeing the Ring of Fire mining development, in collaboration with many other ministries (Finance, Environment, Infrastructure, Aboriginal Affairs).

After the last Ontario provincial election in June 2014, Michael Gravelle was reappointed Minister of Northern Development and Mines. He has served as the Minister of Natural Resources, Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry, Government Caucus Chair and as a member of the Priorities and Planning Board. Mr. Gravelle explains the Ontario governments’ policies and activities related to the Ring of Fire mining development.
